Bird Walking - Twitchers
Hobby
You might not be aware that
bird watching is a very popular and addictive hobby not just in America
, but all
over the world. The known official name for bird watchers is "twitchers".
The hobby is
not very expensive and can be done anywhere. The equipment price is minimal or as maximum as you want. Bird
walking around where you live or where you vacation, is one of the most relaxing and pleasant ways to get to
know Mother Nature.
Most of this equipment
needed for bird walking is optional. You might not care about discovering every little brown bird you see – you
might consider looking at them is reward enough. But on a serious note, bird identification guides are a good
investment. Stick to only the field guides of birds in the areas you do your bird walking. Field guides for the
birds of the world are not only fabulously expensive, but also weigh a ton.
You do need comfortable
footwear for bird watching. The shoes or boots needed, must be sturdy, comfortable and with a minimum of heel.
Depending on where you might walk to follow a bird, you might get into some messy situations, so don't wear you
best shoes. Some twitchers prefer to walk in shoe-boots, some in Wellington
boots. If your
intention is to go around your neighborhood or to tourist bird walking tours, then a pair of sneakers might just
do the job.
Binoculars, while optional,
are highly recommended, especially if you are nearsighted. You can get by with a regular binocular, if your
money situation is tight. With binoculars you can watch the birds without startling them by getting too close
for their comfort.
There are twitching
vacation packages catered just for those who love bird walking. You can start buy looking online at the websites
you see here. You could also plan vacations close to nature parks or preserves and do your bird walking then.
Your choices vary, from staying at a hotel, a vacation rental home or camping out. Before you go, do pack for
any kind of weather. Also come with your sense of humor, because nature rarely performs on
schedule.
If you are expecting a
sunny day, be sure to wear a hat or at least use sunscreen. Also, remember to bring bottles of water, tissues
and hard candy or jellybeans to stave off the worst hunger pangs. Best to bring enough to eat because, but you
might just get caught up in the moment and stay out past your usual dinnertime and need something to hold you
till you back home.
